Your decision to implement, upgrade or downgrade your Wide Area Network is often a difficult one. Results show that most companies upgrade their WAN speeds because they believe that faster connections will improve access to applications, or because their existing service provider has recommended them to do so. In reality, the speed of the line itself is only a single component of the reliability and responsiveness of the application being used.
Latency, connection type, bandwidth, packet loss, router cpu usage, traffic type, traffic mix (mail, web, ftp, etc) as well as the application itself all contribute to the effectiveness of a WAN. To truly make an informed decision on upgrading a WAN, a company needs to understand all aspects of their current WAN and its traffic, with data over a period of time, not just for 1 hour or 1 day.
