Strencom WAN Audit
at a glance
Your decision to implement, upgrade or downgrade your Wide Area Network is often a difficult one. Results show that most companies upgrade their WAN speeds because they believe that faster connections will improve access to applications, or because their existing service provider has recommended them to do so. In reality, the speed of the line itself is only a single component of the reliability and responsiveness of the application being used.
Latency, connection type, bandwidth, packet loss, router cpu usage, traffic type, traffic mix (mail, web, ftp, etc) as well as the application itself all contribute to the effectiveness of a WAN. To truly make an informed decision on upgrading a WAN, a company needs to understand all aspects of their current WAN and its traffic, with data over a period of time, not just for 1 hour or 1 day. Only then can you be assured that the decision to upgrade your WAN will be effective. Strencom can provide this audit for you network.
The information you will allow you to establish:
- What percentage of each connection is being used
- What traffic types are going across your network
- What percentage of each traffic type is utilizing a connection
- The quality of service for each connection, including average and 95th percentile latency
- What the peak times are for traffic in each location
- If a router’ CPU or RAM is max‐ing out, requiring a router upgrade
- The protocol usage per user on the WAN
- And more information about usage and usage patterns.
This information should allow you to;
- Establish your goals for your WAN (now and into the future)
- Plan your network, its roll‐out, and capacity requirements
- Create your baseline performance to use against future performance requirements
- Choose the correct product set for your requirements.
- Determine if hardware help would be a better option, than upgrading the WAN speed.
