Irelands silver cloud! Strencom wins cloud customers using eircom Wholesales NGN Ethernet data product
Tim Murphy, CEO of Strencom, one of Ireland's first cloud computing service providers, today said the availability of 1 Gb/s speeds over eircom Wholesale’s NGN Core is one of the most significant communications infrastructural developments of recent years, enabling Strencom to win new customers, and offering the perfect platform for enterprises moving to cloud based operating models.
Next Generation Ethernet from eircom Wholesale, which was launched in 2010, offers operators and their business customers scalable speeds of up to 1 Gb/s in over 600 urban and provincial locations nationwide. The service uses the eircom Next Generation Core Network and provides the high bandwidth businesses require to securely upload and download large amounts of data when using applications remotely located in the cloud.
"A recent report carried out by Goodbody Economic Consultants suggested that cloud computing has the potential to be a major driver of Ireland’s new economy, creating several thousand new jobs, reducing costs for businesses and improving public service delivery, “ commented Tim Murphy. "However, this can only happen if the necessary bandwidth is in place for operators, cloud companies and the enterprises they serve. eircom Wholesale has built a world class Next Generation core network providing a major boost to Strencom’s cloud based business.
And while the eircom Wholesale NGN has been a major enabler for our cloud service, it will also facilitate many other cloud providers, and in the future will be a significant driver in making Ireland a global hub for cloud innovation."
Strencom, who serves a customer base that includes RPS Group and Alliance Medical, says Irish businesses are using the NGN speeds to transition to more bandwidth-intensive work practices.
“One of our customers is transitioning entirely from physical to digital delivery of product; the availability of NGN core bandwidth is facilitating the future of such companies in Ireland,” Tim said.
Commenting further, Strencom’s CEO said that the transformative speeds now available are facilitated not only by the eircom Wholesale NGN Core investment, but also by a genuine change of approach at eircom Wholesale, which he says is recognisably "open for business" to all operators.
“In some cases our customers are able to get 2,000 times the speed for the same price they paid just a couple years ago. Every week I talk to customers who are surprised and delighted when they hear that we can deliver these speeds, to their office, right now."
Tim Murphy also highlighted the NGN Core’s role in enabling companies based in Ireland to compete for global projects.
"We know of multinational companies based in Ireland pitching within their groups to make Ireland the centre for global research and development projects. The huge bandwidth that eircom Wholesale’s NGN Core provides is fundamental in enabling operators such as Strencom to develop the IP based solutions that underpin those projects," he commented.
"The investment in a Next Generation Core will support foreign direct investment in the Irish economy, helping to retain existing jobs and create new ones."
Chris Hutchings, managing director, eircom Wholesale said, “The cloud economy presents a real opportunity for Ireland. Next Generation Ethernet provides operators with the speed, reliability and flexibility to take full advantage of that opportunity. Through our ongoing NGN investment we will continue to support Strencom and the wider industry’s efforts as they endeavour to turn Ireland into a global hub for cloud based services.”
Commenting on the take up of Next Generation Ethernet Chris continued “14 operators are now providing service using Next Generation Ethernet from eircom Wholesale. To date we've installed NGN nodes in over 600 urban and provincial locations. So whether customers are in Ballsbridge or Ballinrobe operators such as Strencom are able to offer Irish enterprises ultra high-bandwidth NGN connections”.
Chris also highlighted the huge capacity built into the NGN Core – capacity that will be crucial in supporting a successful Next Generation Access programme for Irish consumers and small businesses.
“The Next Generation Core is built on more than 12,000 kilometres of fibre together with a network of IP routers, each capable of supporting eight times the current Internet traffic level demanded by all of eircom’s wholesale and retail broadband customers combined.”
