Cork, 13th January 2009 – Strencom, the business IP services provider, and e|net, the company that operates the Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) in 27 towns across the country, today announced the completion of a deal that will see Strencom provide back-up connections to e|net’s 28 Co-Location facilities. Strencom is now providing the necessary communications redundancy for e|net to ensure constant connectivity to their MANs.
Strencom has connected 28 state of the art Co-Location facilities on the MANs back to e|net’s central Network Operations Centre (NOC) in Limerick. These backup connections ensure that, even in the unlikely event of e|net’s primary network developing a problem, individual MANs won’t lose their connectivity to national and international networks. This means that e|net’s engineers can resolve problems quickly, without the need for site visits. Strencom project managed the entire transition from the previous supplier, ensuring a total switch over in just three weeks from initial proof-of-concept tests.
Resilience is critical in the provision of world class communications. Multinational corporations can’t afford to be cut off from their international offices; Government departments can’t afford to be cut off from citizens who use their services every day. The solution installed by Strencom means that, even if a network outage occurred, e|net can resolve any potential network problems as quickly as possible, ensuring that these users are getting the highest possible levels of connectivity.
The back-up network provided by Strencom uses a secure multi-protocol layer switching (MPLS) solution over XDSL, thus providing full network resilience of e|net’s primary optical fibre connections.
The e|net managed MANs are located in 27 towns and cities around Ireland. They offer fibre optic connectivity and are available to authorised telecommunications companies for use in their customer solutions. Across the country, scores of SME’s, educational institutions, Government departments and multinational corporations use the MANs every day, with a recent survey indicating that over 600,000 people are benefiting from the existence of the MANs.
Conal Henry, chief executive officer, e|net, said “Strencom’s ability to manage the entire transition from our previous supplier was a key factor in our decision. The addition of higher speeds, lower costs and a very proactive support team meant that we knew we’d found the right partner.”
Tim Murphy, managing director, Strencom, said “e|net has the highest profile network in the country. With Government departments, major multinationals and some of Ireland’s biggest companies using it every day, it’s vital that any potential downtime is minimised. Our solution is able to keep the MANs around the country connected to the central hub even in the event of a problem. That reassurance delivers real value to e|net, and most importantly to their customers.”
